Acupuncture for Fertility

What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China thousands of years ago, and it is practiced in many parts of the world today. Based on traditional Chinese medicine theory, the objective of acupuncture is to restore health and maintain general well-being by stimulating specific anatomical points in the body. The procedure involves thin, metallic needles which are used to penetrate the skin.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the body is viewed as a balance of two opposing yet connected forces: yin and yang. While yin is the cold and passive principle, yang is the hot and active one. The Chinese believe that one is healthy if both forces are in a balanced state, and diseases happen when there is an internal imbalance. The imbalance eventually results in the obstruction of the flow of the qi (vital energy) along meridians or pathways. The flow can be unobstructed with the use of acupuncture on certain points on the body that attach with these meridians.

How Acupuncture helps with fertility

Researches have proved that acupuncture can improve fertility through the following ways:

  • Regulating the menstrual cycle

  • Reducing stress by decreasing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. High stress levels are associated with reduced chances of conceiving

  • Improving blood circulation to the pelvic organs, including the ovaries and uterus, allowing the reproductive organs to work to their full potential

  • Increasing blood circulation to the uterus ensures optimal endometrial thickness

  • Helping to trigger ovulation in some women with ovulatory dysfunction

  • Helping women with PCOS, endemetriosis, dysmenorrhea, pelvic inflammation

  • Improving sperm count, motility and structural abnormalities

What should you feel during the acupuncture treatment

When acupuncture is used for fertility, acupuncture needles are normally placed in the patients low abdomen, low back, arms, legs, and head. If the treatment is applied by an experienced practitioner, the patients should not feel any pain. Instead, they should enjoy a calm and relaxing session.
